ODESSA REGION
The Odessa region is situated in South Ukraine where it borders the
Black Sea. The port of Odessa is among the most important ones in the
Ukraine.
Odessa region is mainly characterized by traditional but also
innovative industries. In 2003, growth rates of industrial production
amounted to 18% which was higher than overall production growth rates
of the Ukraine. Thereby, most growth is observed in the food-processing
industry, machinery, chemical and the petrochemical industry.
Almost 70% of the total area of the region is agricultural land. The
main agricultural products are winter wheat, maize, barley, millet,
sunflower, fruits, vegetables, grapes and sugar beats. In general, the
region experiences a growing labour force and unemployment is low.
Agriculture is the second leading sector in the region in terms of
volume of production and employment. The agricultural sector provides
jobs for 35% of total population and it creates almost 50% of regional
budget. More than 800 enterprises and more than 6000 private farmers
are working in this sector.
Transport infrastructure is favourable. Apart from a total of 8 ports,
there are two international transport corridors passing the region,
which makes Odessa an important transport hub. |
