SOUTH-WEST ROMANIA
South-West Romania consists of the Dolj county and the Mehedinti county.
The Dolj county has a total area of 7,414 sq km, representing 3.1% of
Romania’s area, and a population of 735,000 people. Important
industries are the machine industry, the electronics industry, the
chemical industry, the food industry, the textiles industry, the
construction materials industry, the furniture industry and the car
industry. Agriculture employs the highest percentage of the regional
labour force.
The city of Calafat, located in Dolj county, with approximately 22,000
inhabitants, hosts mainly industrial companies specialized in food and
textiles industry. Also a harbour is situated here, representing an
important passing-by point.
The town of Segarcea, with a population of 8,500 inhabitants, has
industrial units in the food industry and chemical field, being also a
powerful farming center.
Mehedinti County has an area of 4,933 sq km, which equals 2.1% of the
country’s total area, and 322,000 inhabitants. The city of Drobeta
Turnu Severin, the biggest city of the county, is an industrial,
transportation and commercial center due to its favourable geographical
position.

textile and textile products industry, wood processing industry,
metallic constructions and metal production industry, furniture
