WEST ROMANIA (TIMIS AND ARAD)
The West Romania region is inhabited by 2 million people, accounting
for 9,3% of the population of Romania. The region has borders with
Hungary and Yugoslavia.
The most dominant industry in the region is machine engineering,
including telecommunications, the production of computers and
electrical equipment. The extractive industries, such as electrical and
thermal power, supply of water and methane and petroleum extraction
also have a strong presence is the region. Within the processing
industry, the food industry is the most significant and modern,
followed by textiles, leather processing and the shoe industry.
The service sector has increased in importance, employing 31% of the
regional workforce. Around 90% of all companies in West Romania are
SMEs; they account for 40% of the regional GDP and represent the only
sector which created jobs since 1989. In 2000, the unemployment rate
was 8.6%.  |
