NORTH-EAST ROMANIA
The North-East region of Romania borders the Ukraine in the north,
the Republic of Moldova in the east and three Romanian regions:
South-East region (South), and Centre and North-West regions (west).
The North-East Region covers an area of 36,850 sq km, which equals 16%
of Romania’s total surface area. Apart from being the largest region of
the country, North-East Romania is also the most populated one with its
3.9 million inhabitants.
SMEs dominate the regional economy accounting for 99.23% of the
total of enterprises. The region has the largest regional GDP growth
rate (8.3% higher than the national rate) and its regional gross added
value in industry is double the rest of the country’s GDP. Taking into
account the number of firms, turnover and number of employees, the main
industrial sectors are the wood, textile and food industries, all with
a long tradition in the region.
Heavy industries are also important for the regional economy, such
as extractive industries, gas and hydroelectric power generation.
In 2003, the agricultural sector employed about 51% of the regional
workforce, while 20% was employed in manufacturing and 29% in services.
The unemployment rate was 9%. |
