BUCHAREST-ILFOV REGION
The Bucharest-Ilfov region includes the city of Bucharest, which is
the capital of Romania, and the surrounding county of Ilfov. The region
is situated in the south-eastern part of Romania. It is home to 2.2
million inhabitants, but is the smallest region in Romania in terms of
surface.
In the Bucharest-Ilfov region, GDP per capita amounts to 44% of the
European Union average which represents the highest value among
Romanian regions. The main economic sectors by turnover are wholesale
and retail, repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and of individual
and household appliances, manufacturing, transport, storage and
communications, electric and thermal energy, gas and water. About
one-fourth of the labour force is employed in the manufacturing
industry. In general, Bucharest-Ilfov has the most important workforce
in the country, due to the high level of active population and high
education levels as well as the high number of working opportunities.
Since Bucharest is situated at the crossing of two major
trans-European road and railway transport corridors, infrastructural
precondions are good. In addition, the region has three airports as
well as a well-developed net of public roads compared to the rest of
the country.
The higher education system has long traditions in the
Bucharest-Ilfov region. The main higher education institutes include
among others the Bucharest University and the Gh. I. Sisesti University
of Agriculture.  |
