RIGA
Riga is the capital of Latvia and, being the economic, industrial
and political centre, home to most of Latvia’s companies. The city
covers an area of 307 sq km and has a total population of around
815,000 people.
The most important industries in Riga are transport, finances, power
industry, food industry, pharmaceutical industry, wood processing etc.
Today, most rapid growth can be seen in industries that are mainly
based on natural resources, as e.g. the wood and the food processing
industries. The unemployment rate in Riga is only half of the country’s
average. The number of small and medium-sized companies constantly
increases, especially in the service sector.
Next to owning a port and an international airport, Riga’s railway and
highway systems are well-developed, characterizing the city’s important
position as a transport hub between West and East.
