TARTU REGION
The Tartu region, located in the Southern part of Estonia, covers an
area of 15,000 sq km and has a population of 370,000 inhabitants. Tartu
is the region’s biggest city with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
The Tartu region is well-developed regarding its industry, the
agricultural and the service sector. Food processing, wood and
furniture, and machinery are the most important industrial sectors in
the region. Nevertheless, the sectors of biotechnology and Information
and Communication Technologies are emerging due to the universities in
the region.
The region has some of the most fertile fields of Estonia, providing
one tenth of Estonia’s agricultural production. About 8% of the
workforce in the region works in agriculture, 27 % of the workforce is
employed in industry and 65 % in the service sector. The unemployment
level was 8 % in 2001.
As a business region, the region can be characterized by a favourable
location and a sound infrastructure, powerful scientific potential,
well-skilled, entrepreneurial and cooperative people.  |
