NORTH-WEST AND NORTH-CENTRAL BULGARIA
North Western and North Central Bulgaria includes the so-called
Mizia area which spreads over a big part of the Danube Plain and
borders the Dobrudzha Plato to the east, the Balkan range to the south,
the Danube to the north and Serbia to the west. The area covers
approximately 26% of the Bulgarian territory and is inhabited by 22% of
the national population, which equals 1.7 million people.
The region’s main industries are the textile, chemicals and food
industry. These industries are concentrated in the more developed
regional centres as e.g. Pleven and Vidin. Around one third of the
workforce is employed in the industrial sector. Furthermore, Bulgaria’s
only nuclear power plant is situated here, and the Bulgarian government
plans the construction and opening of a second one.
Agriculture has long traditions in this geographic area and provides
around 18% of the employment. Various sorts of fruits and vegetables
are produced and processed here owing to the fertile soils and
favourable climate conditions.
